The re-match of the 2008 Olympic final promised a great battle between two undefeated teams, the world and Olympic champions, France, and their challenger, Iceland.

A packed hall and vibrant atmosphere greeted this semi-final clash to decide the first finalist. There were no surprises in the starting line-up, with both teams going for a 6-0 defensive formation and both goalkeepers making great saves.

France took the lead thanks to marvellous long-distance shots from their excellent winger, Luc Abalo. Iceland had problems getting the ball to pivot, Róbert Gunnarsson, but Gudmundur Gudmundsson’s team re-organised its attacking system and scored from distance to keep the "Les Bleus" from accelerating away.

The Icelandic defenders had massive problems with one-to-one situations when superstar Nikola Karabati? was attacking, the Montpellier player easily finding the way to the Icelandic goal.

During the first half, France often led by two or three goals, and Iceland needed to fight to keep up. The Vikings, hot for revenge after their Beijing 2008 defeat, fought bravely but the French were impressive in defence.

The Icelandic defence improved greatly and their attackers, Aron Palmarsson and Gudjón Valur Sigurdsson, took advantage of every French defensive error, enabling Iceland to take the lead but not for long. Karabati? scored crucial goals and France had a two-goal lead after 30 minutes.

France returned from the dressing room clear in their mission to win the match. They selected top gear, played clever in offence, and within seven minutes had increased their lead with goals by Michael Guigou to six.

The Icelandic defence fell apart and became almost non-existent, whilst their players seemed in shock after the French Express overran them.

Iceland were simply unable to find their way back into the game, and France, who deservedly won 36-28, now have a great chance of completing the treble on Sunday having already secured the World Championship and Olympic Games titles.

Today, Gudmundsson’s boys only had a few moments in a game that was totally dominated by the French and the influential Karabati?, who has the ability to decide important games.

'Les Bleus’ domination allowed coach Claude Onesta to rest some of his key players during the last phase of the game and this may bode well for the gold medal clash tomorrow.
